Course Description

Conflict Sensitive Education (CSE) is specifically designed to be flexible and catering to a changing context. It is inclusive and based on principles of equity, social justice in order to address causes and drivers of conflict. It is also consistent with protection needs for teachers and children by providing psychosocial support (PSS), building on socio-emotional learning principles which you learnt about in the course “Understanding Your Students”. In this course, we will look at some example methods and approaches for applying the principles of inclusion, equity, peace and social justice in your classroom practice and help students also to practice important life skills such as conflict mitigation and resolution – a key skill for learning how to live together. Providing opportunities for students to apply these life skills and affirmation of behaviour that promotes inclusion, equity and social justice is therefore a feature of peace education. As a teacher of peace education, your role is to develop your skills in culturally-responsive pedagogy. Doing so builds positive, social identities for students and sensitises you yourself to the ways in which the mandated curriculum excludes some and privileges others. You are then able to nurture a generation of students who are academically prepared, socially aware, culturally sensitive, and ready to have a role in conflict resolution and create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Course Objectives

This course prepares learners to understand and practise the principles, approaches, and strategies for creating a safe and supportive learning environment conducive to maximising the positive impacts of education and therefore the prevention of new conflicts in conflict-prone settings.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, teachers will be able to

Define CSE and explain why teachers have an important role;
Identify linkages between teachers, teaching, CSE and Education for Peace;
Correlate the five learning pillars with the integration of CSE in practice;
Reflect on key activities for developing peace competencies and how these address conflict situations;
Propose additional activities for developing peace competencies;
Develop a holistic view of what a culturally-responsive teacher achieves in their classroom practice;
Identify learning activities that correlate with both the characteristics of cultural-responsiveness and the Cultural Knowings Framework; and
Identify the peace competencies that are developed through culturally-responsive learning activities.
