Course Description
This course, Enhancing Meaningful Learning Experience through MLE (Multilingual Education), provides a definition of MLE and MTB-MLE (Mother tongue-based multilingual education) and an overview of ways it can be implemented in the classroom.
The course covers the following modules:
Module 1: Understanding MLE and its importance

Course Objectives
This course will help you to understand multilingual education (MLE), mother-tongue based multilingual education (MTB-MLE) and provide you with key language acquisition theories that support MLE. It will also allow you to practice strategies and tools for multilingual education in your classroom and with your students.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, teachers will be able to
- Define MLE and MTB-MLE;
- Recognize the challenges that MLE addresses;
- List explanations for why MLE is important;
- Understand 3 language acquisition theories (Common Underlying Proficiency Theory, Sociocultural Theory, and Translanguaging Theory) and their relevance to MLE;
- Understand the steps to implementing MTB-MLE;
- Identify examples of strategies for MTB-MLE and MLE; and
- Practice developing teaching and learning resources for MTB-MLE.
