Introduction to
Media and Information Literacy
Course Description

This course is designed to introduce learners to basic Media and Information Literacy concepts including the definitions, individual and societal rights, and MIL competencies

Media and information literacy (MIL) is defined as a “set of competencies that empowers citizens to access, retrieve, understand, evaluate and use, create as well as share information, media and digital content in all formats, using various tools, in a critical, ethical and effective way, to achieve their personal, social, occupational, educational and developmental goals.” (UNESCO, 2022)

MIL is gaining greater awareness and recognition in Myanmar in recent years among various sectors – government, mass media agencies, media NGOs, civil society, and the academe. MIL competencies are now being practiced or applied in different settings. It is important for all individuals, especially young people, to acquire MIL competencies in order to know and act upon their rights to create and share information, media, and digital content in all formats, using various tools, in a critical, ethical and effective way.
